Preventive dentistry is an effort to prevent oral diseases such as caries, and periodontal disease so that you spend as little time and money at the dentist as possible.. There are 4 main goals involved:
1. Home care. The most important factor in your oral health is your ability to clean your teeth and gums on a daily basis.
2. Diet and nutrition. Frequent starchy snacks, or acidic foods and drinks, can damage your teeth and lead to caries and erosion.
3. Elimination of destructive habits and conditions. Some common habits and conditions can damage your teeth and gums. These include smoking, clenching and grinding, nail biting, dry mouth, and reflux.
4. Regular cleanings and exams. A yearly exam with your dentist enables your dentist to find caries/cavities and other problems early, when they are easier to fix. It also enables your hygienist to perform regular cleanings. Your hygienist will remove calculus and plaque to keep your gums healthy and prevent periodontal disease.
